Continuity of care

Focused on the full journey.

Anesthesiology is more than the time spent in a procedure. It includes understanding your health, developing the care plan, closely monitoring vital functions, and supporting your transition to recovery.

01

Before

Listen & prepare

Review health history, medications, allergies, previous experiences, and the plan for your procedure.

02

During

Monitor & respond

Administer the planned anesthesia while continuously monitoring breathing, circulation, oxygen, and other vital signs.

03

After

Support recovery

Guide the transition into recovery and help address comfort, nausea, breathing, and immediate post-procedure needs.

Your procedure guide

A little preparation brings greater peace of mind.

Your facility and care team will provide directions specific to you. Their instructions always come first.

01

Share the full picture

Bring a current list of medications and supplements. Mention allergies, sleep apnea, heart or lung conditions, and previous anesthesia concerns.

02

Follow your instructions

Follow the eating, drinking, and medication directions from your facility and physician. Call your care team if anything is unclear or your health changes.

03

Plan your trip home

When your care team requires an adult driver or someone to stay with you, make those arrangements before the day of your procedure.

Patient education

Understanding anesthesia

Start with dependable educational material from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, then discuss questions specific to your health with your own care team.

Common questions

Answers for a more confident day.

These general answers support—not replace—the instructions from your surgeon, facility, and anesthesia team.

What information should I share before anesthesia?+

Share your health conditions, medications and supplements, allergies, prior anesthesia experiences, sleep apnea, recent illness, pregnancy status when applicable, and any questions or concerns.

Why are eating and drinking instructions important?+

Food or liquid in the stomach can create serious risk during anesthesia. Follow the exact timing provided by your own care team because instructions can differ by patient and procedure.

Can I take my regular medication?+

Some medications continue as usual while others may require special instructions. Do not guess or stop prescribed medication on your own—confirm with the team responsible for your procedure.

Will I need someone to drive me home?+

Many procedures involving anesthesia or sedation require a responsible adult to drive you home, and sometimes to stay with you. Confirm your facility’s requirements in advance.
